Stadium of Epidaurus

Athletic competitions as well as competitions in rhapsody, music and drama were part of the ritual that took place during the festival in honor of Asclepius. The Stadium of Epidaurus, like the other stadiums located in large sanctuaries, was intended for the performance of sports competitions attracting a large number of visitors.
The stadium was built in a natural cavity in the ground, which was shaped appropriately for the AthletesThe track is 180.7 m long and is surrounded by a spring water pipe. At both ends of the track there were special start and finish areas for the road race. From the 4th century BC, limestone seats began to be manufactured for the spectators. There is also an underground vaulted passage that was intended for the entrance of the athletes to the athletics.
In recent years, the Epidaurus Monuments Conservation Committee completed the shaping of the track and the restoration of the seats on the south side of the Stadium. The restoration of the vaulted passage is in progress.
